Hey friends,
This week, I had to pause work on the D&D adventure and focus more on commissions. This time, my challenge was to get better at color grading, a skill that I’m least proficient in. And I’m really defeated. Because regardless of the number of videos I watched or the number of times I practiced, I haven’t been satisfied with my results. But I will endure the work and get stronger. Hopefully.
One thing that’s helping me push through is being stubborn, especially when it comes to solving problems. Whenever I’m overthinking on this scale, the best thing I do is delete whatever mess I spent the past hour+ on and start over. You might be reading this thinking “But Francis, that sounds a bit extreme.” But is it really? That’s how school is structured. You go to class, take notes, struggle with homework, but then crunch everything you’ve been struggling with into the midterms. It’s repetition, and eventually, you’ll put the right things into muscle memory.
So if you’re reading this, you’re struggling with a project, and you have the time, consider starting over. It might not make a difference, but your brain will look at the project one step at a time, and you’ll catch things that you might not have seen because everything was buried before.
Hope you have a great week.
-Francis
Favorite Things This Week
🍿 Movie - One Piece Film Red
This week, One Piece Film Red came out in the U.S. and I was SO surprised to see it actually available in my local theater…even though there was only one timeslot to watch it subbed. Even though there were only 5 other people watching it in my theater, the movie itself was magical. The music had a wide range of emotions and I’m actually sad it ended.
🎞️ Editing - How to Color Grade Perfect Skin Tones by Joris Hermans
Out of all the videos I’ve watched on color grading, I have to give this video its own special shoutout. Joris’ process is simple and easy to understand. It does take a few tries to understand his process, but this has been my foundation for all my edits.
🖱️League of Legends Worlds Championship Finals - T1 vs DRX
While everybody is watching the World Series, I was doing a watch party for the League of Legends World Championship Finals. Arguably the closest and best finals ever, this best of 5 series was MAGICAL. It was Deft’s Last Dance (DRX) vs Return of the Unkillable Demon King (T1). Congratulations to DRX and Deft especially because he’s been at it for 10 freaking years. I remember when I first started watching esports, he was a rookie!
